You can also perform a step by step graphical way using synaptic for correcting Malayalam. Then reload/restart your webbrowser/any other program you want to learn the fonts. This will fix any rendering problem if there in your system. Open command line/ Terminal and use these commands. If you are using lenny or sid use lenny or sid instead of etch. Open the file /etc/apt/sources.list and add a new line deb etch main. All fonts are packaged with them and there is no rendering bugs.įor Older versions of GNU/Linux distributions follow the below steps :

Mozilla Firefox, although a highly recommended browser, does not yet offer great support for rendering Malayalam (The chillus are a problem).

Then, for good measure, zip that file to prevent accidentally editing the backup file.Since Unicode has gained popularity recently, If you use old browsers they might not have the capability to understand Unicode and hence they might display garbage. Word of Caution: Take a backup of the Registry entry you're about to change. Only sacrifice I have to make is not being able to use the 'beautiful' looking Malayalam for things like Folder names, which I don't do anyway. So there, for Malayalam, I set the Noto Malayalam font and it works like a charm. I use Firefox as my primary browser and that supports specifying fonts for each Language. I did not have to go out empty handed though. I think I may have been conditioned to find Segoe as the only font worthy for that honor on Windows. I, however, did not find Noto as appealing to be the system font. So, just install that font and provide that TTF against Segoe UI entry in the Registry

Turns out, Noto Malayalam is pretty good at both. So until u/feyzee mentioned Noto, I dint even think of looking that up. The main problem I was having was finding a good font that handles both Malayalam and English well. This mapping is in the Registry path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts Hence to change the System Font, the easiest way is to replace is the TTF file being used when Windows looks for 'Segoe UI' with whatever font file I want. System wide Windows uses 'Segoe UI' font - which IMO is excellent for English as a System font. So first up, thank you guys! Now, this solution has to be done via Registry Editor. I took a mix of approaches mentioned by u/feyzee, u/karinthandan, & u/zcraber and did some googling on my own. At the very least it might help direct them to finding a better solution. Nonetheless, I will post what I found here just in case anyone ever stumbles upon this thread with the same issue.

So I figured out how to fix this at a system level - but, spoiler, I decided not to. If anyone knows the answer to it, could you help with that? Otherwise, could you please help by "upvoting" it for better visibility? Finally ended up posting it on for help. Hey Guys - I have been having issues (of annoying nature, not debilitating) with Malayalam fonts on Windows and couldn't find a good solution.
